HISTORY: Remembering Murtala Muhammed 44 Years After(1975-2020)

Murtala Muhammed was born to a Fulani parent in Kano State of the northern part of the country in November 3, 1938.

Murtala Muhammed had his second education in the present Barewa College, Zaria, Kaduna State and graduated in 1957, obtaining school certificate.

Murtala Muhammed joined the Nigerian Army immediately after his secondary education in the year 1958. The young Murtala was commissioned as second lieutenant in 1961 after completing his training.

In the year 1962, Murtala was appointed ADC to Chief Majekodunmi, the then Western Region administrator after cheif Obafemi Awolowo was replaced.

Murtala Muhammed was among the northern politicians and leaders that opposed the government of Agunyi-Ironsi on the fact that Hausa man was killed and an Igbo man Rose to power,this brought about bloody coup that eventually overthrew and killed Agunyi-Ironsi.

Murtala Muhammed became Nigeria Head of State on July 29, 1975 after overthrowing Yakubu Gowon who was in Kampala (Kenya) for Organization of African Unity(OAU) summit.

Murtala was in power from 1975 and some military Officials like Buka Dimka, Bisala among others were assigned to him. On the faithful day morning, Murtala as head of State was on his way to Office in Dodan Barrack from his Ikoyi Federal Secretariat alongside his ADC, Lieutenant Akintunde Akinshehinwa were both killed. He was aged 37
