The Presidential candidate of the National Republican Convention in the 1993 general election, Bashir Tofa has described the arrest and detention of the man who led the peaceful protest in Katsina, Nastura Sarif as undemocratic in a Democratic system of any government.

Bashir Tofa is the opponent of MKO Abiola, the acclaimed winner of the election annulled by the then Military Head of State, General Ibrahim Babangida.

Tofa said his arrest could trigger crisis in the country if the federal government fails to release him.

Nastura Sarif is the Chairman Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Coalition for Northern Group (CNG). The group led a peaceful protest on Tuesday owing to the continuous killing by bandits in the North Western state of Katsina.

In a statement released by Bashir Tofa, the ex-presidential candidate said arrest is a bad example of intolerance in a democracy.

Tofa called on President to immediately released Nastura Sarif. He went further that arrest of Sarif could lead to an unavoidable crisis.
