Pre-Season: West Ham Thrash Celtic 6-2

Well, I wasn’t expecting that! Celtic away is always going to be a difficult fixture, especially when you haven’t got a full strength squad and Celtic have already played games in European competition. But this was a stroll and it was the ideal game for many of our players to find their game feet.

When we went 1-0 down after seven minutes but after that it was basically all one way traffic. Every time we attacked we looked as if we might score. And we did – three goals in each half. Antonio was too hot for the Celtic defence to handle and they just couldn’t cope with his strength, pace and unpredictability. He scored two and won a penalty, which Mark Noble proceeded to despatch.

In the second half we scored three outstanding goals. Said Benhrama got his first for the club after maintaining his composure at the end of a mazy run, when it looked as if the opportunity might have escaped. A few minutes later he was on the edge of the area and flicked the ball on to Jarrod Bowen who back flicked it with the outside of his boot to score the kind of goal that he’s unlikely ever to score again. And towards the end it was time for the ex Celtic player Armstrong Oku-Flex to sneak the ball into the far corner of the net from the edge of the box. He only played 20 minutes but I liked what I saw.

The game wasn’t totally one-sided, though and if I had any worries it was the performance of the defence, and Darren Randolph. Darren looked all over the place and their second goal was a combination of Ryan Fredericks not putting in the effort to beat the Celtic striker to the header, and Randolph fumbling the ball. A few minutes later he played silly buggers in the area and was lucky to escape from it.

Later in the game Moyes brought on a lot of players including the ever impressive Conor Coventry and Ben Johnson. Nathan Holland and 19 year old midfielder Kieran Forson also got a few minutes game time at the end.

All in allm this was a hugely encouraging performance from the Hammers and it demonstrated that Michail Antonio is already on fire!
